Tidal Music Streaming

Tidal (stylized as TIDAL) is a Norwegian subscription-based music, podcast and video streaming service that combines lossless audio and high-definition music videos with exclusive content and special features on music. Tidal was launched in 2014 by Norwegian public company Aspiro and is now owned by Project Panther Bidco.

With distribution agreements with all three major record labels and many independent labels,[2] Tidal claims to provide access to more than 70 million tracks and 250,000 music videos.[3] It offers two levels of service: Tidal Premium (lossy quality) and Tidal HiFi (lossless CD quality – FLAC-based 16-Bit/44.1 kHz – and MQA – typically lossy 24-bit/96 kHz). Tidal claims to pay the highest percentage of royalties to music artists and songwriters within the music streaming market.[4]

In March 2015, Aspiro was acquired by Project Panther Bidco Ltd., which relaunched the service with a mass-marketing campaign, promoting it as the first artist-owned streaming service.[5] In January 2017, Sprint Corporation bought 33% of Tidal for a reported $200 million. In March 2021, Square agreed to buy Tidal for $297 million.[6] As part of the deal, Square will own a majority of Tidal, but also appoint Jay Z to the board of directors at Square.[6]

While some observers praised the high fidelity, lossless audio quality, and higher subscription fees that would result in higher royalties to the artists and songwriters, others felt the high subscription fees and exclusive Tidal content from the artists involved could lead to more music piracy. Tidal claimed to have over 3 million subscribers in 2016,[7] although the veracity of those claims and the company's reported streaming numbers have been questioned.[8] As of March 2021, Tidal operates in 61 countries.[9]

Branching off from WiMP, which was launched in Norway in 2010 and later available in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Poland, Aspiro launched the Tidal brand in the UK, the US, and Canada on October 28, 2014. The launch was supported by Sonos and 15 other home audio manufacturers as integrations partners.[10] In January 2015, Tidal launched in five more European countries: Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.[2]

Aspiro was purchased by Project Panther Bidco Ltd. (controlled by American rapper and businessman Jay-Z) for SEK 466 million (USD $56.2 million) in January 2015.[11][12] Before the acquisition of Aspiro, Jay-Z stated in an interview with Billboard that he was willing to partner with other streaming services to carry out his vision. "We talked to every single service and we explored all the options," he said, "But at the end of the day, we figured if we're going to shape this thing the way we see it, then we need to have independence. And that became a better proposition for us, not an easier one, mind you," he concluded.[13]

On April 16, 2015, it came to public attention that Tidal was closing its original Aspiro offices in Stockholm, terminating the employment for all Swedish employees and the CEO, Andy Chen.[14] The company refused to comment on closing the offices but confirmed that Andy Chen had been replaced as CEO by Peter Tonstad.[15] In September 2015, Tidal began selling digital downloads and CDs.[16] In December 2015, Tidal appointed Jeff Toig as CEO of the company. Toig left the company in March 2017.[17] Richard Sanders was announced as CEO in August 2017.[18]

In January 2017, the company announced a partnership with British company Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) to deliver master-quality recordings—authenticated and unbroken versions (typically 96 kHz / 24-bit) with the highest possible resolution to its HiFi subscribers. Tidal is the only streaming company to offer this MQA service.[19] MQA is a "lossy" format. On January 23, 2017, US mobile carrier Sprint announced that they were buying a 33 percent stake in Tidal,[20] and it was reported that Sprint would offer exclusive content to Sprint customers.[21] In September 2017, Tidal partnered with Mercedes-Benz's web portal app.[22] American rapper Nicki Minaj starred in a commercial promoting the Mercedes partnership.[23] MQA master-quality catalog available on Tidal currently comprises certain albums and singles from Universal Music GroupWarner Music Group, its affiliates and certain independent distributors, including AvidPlay service provided by Avid Technology.[24] Since November 2020, the largest part of master-quality catalog available on Tidal is that of Warner Music Group and its affiliates, which was made available as part of a new deal with MQA and Warner Music Group itself.[25] In past, Sony Music also offered certain albums and singles from their catalog in master quality on Tidal, but their quality were later reduced; exceptions include Beyoncé's albums Lemonade and Homecoming: The Live Album, both released by Parkwood Entertainment and distributed by Sony Music's label Columbia Records (likely most possible reason of these exceptions is Tidal's ownership - Jay-Z is Beyoncé's husband).

In 2017, Tidal announced a series of podcasts to launch the same year.[26] American rappers Fat Joe and Joey Badass each host "Coca Vision" and "47 Minutes" respectively.[27][28]

On March 2, 2021, it was announced that financial technology company Square, Inc. had reached an agreement to acquire majority ownership of Tidal. Square will pay $297 million in cash and stock for Tidal, and Jay-Z will have a board position. Jay-Z and other artists who own stocks in Tidal will remain stakeholders.[29][30]

Platform exclusivity

A key selling point for Tidal as compared with other streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora Radio is the exclusive content already available and expected for the future from the current artists who co-own the company, as well as others. Exclusive content available on the relaunch of Tidal included Rihanna's single "Bitch Better Have My Money", The White Stripes debut television appearance, Daft Punk's Electroma (2006), and playlists personally curated by Jay-ZBeyoncéArcade Fire and Coldplay.[31] Tidal stated on its official Twitter page that "lots of exclusive content [is] on the way".[32]

Jay-Z's catalogue was not available on Spotify but was almost entirely exclusive on Tidal[33] until his 50th birthday.[34]

Artist ownership

During the press conference, Jay-Z, BeyoncéRihannaKanye WestNicki MinajDaft PunkJack WhiteMadonnaArcade FireAlicia KeysUsherChris MartinCalvin Harrisdeadmau5Jason Aldean and J. Cole were introduced to the stage as "the owners of TIDAL".[5][35][36] Eric Harvey of Pitchfork stated of the artists who co-own the service, "These are the 1 percent of pop music in the world right now, these are artists who do not answer to record labels, do not answer to corporations."[13]

On March 30, 2015, a press conference was held at Skylight at Moynihan Station in New York City, to relaunch Tidal officially.[37] The conference started with a brief introduction and explanation of Tidal. After introducing the aforementioned sixteen artist co-owners of Tidal onstage, recording artist Alicia Keys spoke on behalf of the artists and for Tidal. She stated, "So we come together before you on this day, March 30th, 2015, with one voice in unity in the hopes that today will be another one of those moments in time, a moment that will forever change the course of music history." Keys also described the event as like a "graduation".[38] At the end of the press conference, all artists onstage signed a declaration, which stated Tidal's mission.[39] Tidal claimed to have gained 100,000 new subscribers following the press conference revealing the artists involved in the service.[40]

In June 2015, Lil Wayne joined the service's roster as an artist co-owner, kicking off the partnership by exclusively releasing a track on the service called "Glory".[41] On February 23, 2016, T.I. joined the service's roster as the latest co-owner, kicking off the partnership by releasing "Money Talk", a single from his tenth album, Dime Trap, exclusively on the service as well as the album was streamed live from Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta.[42]

On July 1, 2017, it was reported Kanye West left Tidal as co-owner and shareholder, after a financial argument with its board of directors[43] regarding compensation for his contributions to the company. West later demanded payment from Tidal of $3 million for his inclusion on marketing efforts, video production, and claiming the release of his 2016 album, The Life of Pablo, being the reason for Tidal's 1.5 million subscriber increase soon following the release.[44] In response, Tidal stated West failed to deliver the videos he promised on his contract.[45]

Releases

In April 2015, Tidal exclusives included Beyoncé releasing a video of her performing "Die With You", a never-before-heard original song, dedicated to her and Jay-Z's wedding anniversary, Madonna releasing a teaser of her upcoming music video at the time for "Ghosttown" and Rihanna debuting her brand new song and music video "American Oxygen".[46][47]

In January 2016, Tidal released Rihanna's Anti as a one-week exclusive stream.[48] In February 2016, Tidal secured an exclusive initial release with Kanye West's The Life of Pablo. West went on to vow that the album would "never appear on any other services [than Tidal]", nor would it ever be for sale.[49] On April 23, 2016, Beyoncé released her second visual album, Lemonade, for streaming exclusively on Tidal. On April 25, it was made available for purchase by track or album on Amazon Music and the iTunes store and on May 6, it arrived at physical retailers.

Jay-Z's 2017 album 4:44 debuted on Tidal.[50] The next year, Jay Z released a collaborative album with Beyoncé, Everything Is Love, via Tidal.[51]

Livestreaming

Tidal regularly streams concerts live and on-demand including the Made in America festival and TIDAL X Brooklyn.[52][53] In 2018, Tidal live-streamed Hot 97's 25th annual Summer Jam.[54] Also in 2018, Tidal partnered with Equal Justice Initiative to live-stream The Concert for Peace and Justice.[55] The concert commemorated the opening of The National Memorial for Peace and Justice and The Legacy Museum, both located in Montgomery, Alabama.

Reception

Shortly after Tidal's launch and press conference, the mobile version of the service shot to the top 20 of the U.S. iPhone Apps chart. Following criticism for its "out-of-touch marketing campaign", two weeks later, the app had already fallen out of the top 700 rankings of the same list.[56]

Praise

Glenn Peoples of Billboard wrote that Tidal was a good thing for the music industry. He stated that the U.S. streaming market needed a "kick in the butt" when looking at the growth rate of streaming from 2014 to 2015. Peoples also noted that more competition in the streaming market is a good thing as it could lead to a "greater diffusion of innovation". He concluded that a service like Tidal – which is promoted as paying a fair amount of royalties to both the artists and the songwriters – will lead to the industry as a whole sorting out its issues with streaming royalties.[57]

Criticism

Writing for USA Today's website, Micah Peters released a list of "3 reasons why Jay-Z's new Tidal streaming service is stupid". The article focused on points that the high fidelity, the lossless audio quality model being promoted was "overestimat[ing] the average listener". Peters worried that most listeners do not have the required, advanced headphones to distinguish the difference between ordinary and high fidelity audio. The article also stated that the $20 price was not reasonable for the mass market.[58]

Recording artist Lily Allen expressed her opinions on Tidal on her official Twitter account. She feared that the high price of Tidal, as well as the mass popularity of the artist co-owners, could result in crippling the music industry and increasing piracy. She stated, "I love Jay-Z so much, but Tidal is (so) expensive compared to other perfectly good streaming services, he's taken the biggest artists… Made them exclusive to Tidal (am I right in thinking this?), people are going to swarm back to pirate sites in droves".[59]

Jay-Z responded to criticism with a freestyle during the Tidal X: Jaÿ-Z B-Sides[60] concert. He compares Tidal with Apple and Nike and says that Tidal has been subjected to hypocritical criticism.

Kanye West's decision to initially release his album The Life of Pablo as a Tidal streaming exclusive led to criticism from fans, who felt that streaming exclusivity could promote piracy. The album was pirated over 500,000 times as of February 17, 2016.[61] West later made the album available to stream on competing services.[62] In July 2017, West terminated his contract with Tidal, claiming that the service owed him $3 million.[63]

Finances and royalties

One artist has stated that artist royalties per track from Aspiro/Tidal are currently over three times than those paid by Spotify, but that royalties may decrease to provide a sufficient return on investment.[64] Jay-Z commented in an interview to Billboard that artists would be paid more by being streamed on Tidal than with Spotify, stating "Will artists make more money? Even if it means less profit for our bottom line? Absolutely."[13] In the same interview, he also stressed the service was for people "lower down on the food chain".[13]

On February 27, 2016, Yesh Music, LLC and John Emanuele from the band The American Dollar launched a $5 million class-action lawsuit that claimed Tidal has yet to compensate the band for any of the royalty payments accrued from the streaming of the band's 116 copyrighted songs. The suit also accused Tidal of using faulty numbers to payout artists while also having undercut these same individuals by 35%. A response from Tidal stated that they are indeed fully up to date on all royalties for the group and have removed said intellectual property from their servers.[65][66][67]

Tidal has apps available for Microsoft WindowsmacOSiOS and Android compatible devices. Tidal is compatible with Apple TVRoku,[73] CarPlayAndroid TV, and Amazon Fire TV.[74]

Live Nation Entertainment, Inc

Live Nation Entertainment, Inc is an American global entertainment company, founded in 2010, following the merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. The company promotes, operates, and manages ticket sales for live entertainment in the United States and internationally. It also owns and operates entertainment venues, and manages the careers of music artists.

In 2009, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, a concert promotion firm and ticketing company, reached an agreement to merge. The new company received regulatory approval and was named Live Nation Entertainment.[3][4] Michael Rapino, then-CEO of Live Nation, became the new company's CEO, while Ticketmaster CEO Irving Azoff was named executive chairman.[5]

The merger was approved first in Norway and Turkey in 2009.[6] The United Kingdom's Competition Commission provisionally ruled against the merger,[7] but reversed its decision on December 22, 2009.[6]

The merger was opposed in the U.S. by some regulators, artists, fans, and competing firms, who argued it would reduce competition in the industry and increase ticket costs.[8][9] Artist Bruce Springsteen was one vocal opponent of the merger at the time.[10]

On January 25, 2010, the United States Justice Department approved the merger pending certain conditions.[11] Ticketmaster had to sell ownership of its self-ticketing company, Paciolan,[11] and license its software to Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), which would allow it to compete "head-to-head" with Ticketmaster for business.[12][13] AEG was given the option after five years to buy the software, replace it with something else, or partner with another ticketing company.[12] Additionally, Live Nation Entertainment was placed under a 10-year court order prohibiting it from retaliating against venues that choose to accept competing ticket contracts.[13]

Investments and growth

In 2013, the company acquired the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and announced a joint venture with Insomniac Events, a promoter focused on electronic dance music.[14][15][16] The company later acquired C3 Presents (2014),[17] Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival (2015),[18] and Founders Entertainment (2016), the parent company of Governors Ball Music Festival.[19] In October 2016, Live Nation Entertainment bought AC Entertainment, a Knoxville Tennessee music company,[20] as well as several international companies.[21] The company continued to invest in music festivals and promoters in 2017, purchasing a controlling interest in BottleRock Napa Valley Music Festival,[22] Salt Lake City-based concert promoter United Concerts,[23] and CT Touring.[24] In 2017, Live Nation Entertainment reported revenue of $10.3 billion.[25][26] In 2018, the company expanded its concert promotion segment by acquiring a majority stake in a number of companies including Frank Productions,[27] Emporium Presents,[28] and Red Mountain Entertainment.[29]

Also in 2018, the United States Department of Justice launched an investigation following complaints by AEG that Live Nation pressured them into using Ticketmaster and intentionally avoided booking acts for AEG venues.[30] Live Nation stated that decisions in selecting venues were not punitive, and were instead based on size and management.[30]

Live Nation Entertainment has acquired a majority stake in the David Grutman owned Groot Hospitality, a Miami-based company. The portfolio includes LIV nightclub located inside the historic Fontainebleau Hotel, which opened in 2008 as host to the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2008. The portfolio includes restaurants and nightlife venues, to include Story (2012), Komodo (2015), Swan & Bar Bevy with Pharrell Williams(2018) and Papi Steak (2019).[31]

In 2020, Live Nation was hit particularly hard by the novel coronavirus pandemic, with essentially all concerts and sporting events around the world on hold. The company has been sued as it has been reluctant to offer full refunds to customers, though it has since amended its refund rules to address those complaints. On February 25, 2021, Live Nation released its full-year 2020 financial results, of which the company saw revenues fall by 84 percent.[32]

The government of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund has acquired a 5.7 percent stake in Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster.Based on Live Nation's share prices as of 28 April 2020, the investment is valued at just shy of $500 million.[33] The investment is passive, and was purchased on the open market. The Saudi Public Investment Fund is now the company's third-largest shareholder, with John Malone's Liberty Media the largest individual shareholder with a 33 percent stake.[34]

Operating divisions

Live Nation Entertainment's business segments are concerts, ticketing, and sponsorship and advertising.[25] The company promotes and operates live music events and manages artists under its concerts division Live Nation Concerts.[25] Live Nation Entertainment's artist management arm, called Artist Nation, is included within its concerts division[35][25] and also includes Front Line Management and Roc Nation.[36] Live Nation Entertainment owns and operates venues, including the House of Blues.[37] The company sells tickets to live events through Ticketmaster.[25]

International

In 2012, the company announced a partnership with Creativeman Productions, based in Tokyo, Japan.[38]

In June 2013, Live Nation was among those charged with violating Ontario health and safety laws following a stage collapse at a Radiohead concert that killed one crew member.[39][40] A 2019 inquest returned a verdict of accidental death.[41]

In August 2015, Live Nation announced it would form Live Nation Germany, to be created in partnership with German promoter Marek Lieberberg. Live Nation Germany would also have oversight over Live Nation events in Austria and Switzerland.[42]

In March 2016, Live Nation acquired Big Concerts International, South Africa's leading concert promoter.[43] The following year, the company acquired majority interests in Israeli promoter Blue Stone Entertainment and the UK's Cuffe & Taylor.[21]

In May 2018, Live Nation Entertainment acquired a majority stake in Brazil's Rock in Rio festival (including from previous stakeholder SFX Entertainment), with its founder Roberto Medina continuing to manage the festival's operations, and providing consulting to Live Nation.[44][45]

Streaming Services

Music streaming platforms

Although music streaming is no longer a freely replicable public good, streaming platforms such as SpotifyDeezerApple MusicSoundCloud, and Prime Music have shifted music streaming to a club-type good. While some platforms, most notably Spotify, give customers access to a freemium service that enables the use of limited features for exposure to advertisements, most companies operate under a premium subscription model.[41] Under such circumstances, music streaming is financially excludable, requiring that customers pay a monthly fee for access to a music library, but non-rival, since one customer's use does not impair another's.

Music streaming platforms have grown rapidly in popularity in recent years. Spotify has over 207 million users, as of 1 January 2019, in 78 different countries,[42] Apple Music has about 60 million, and SoundCloud has 175 million.[43] All platforms provide varying degrees of accessibility. Apple Music and Prime Music only offer their services for paid subscribers, whereas Spotify and SoundCloud offer freemium and premium services. Napster, owned by Rhapsody since 2011, has resurfaced as a music streaming platform offering subscription based services to over 4.5 million users as of January 2017.[44] As music streaming providers have proliferated and competition has pushed the price of subscriptions down, music piracy rates have also fallen (see chart to the right).

The music industry's response to music streaming was initially negative. Along with music piracy, streaming services disrupted the market and contributed to the fall in revenue from $14.6 billion in revenue in 1999 to $6.3 billion in 2009 for the U.S. CD's and single-track downloads were not selling because content was freely available on the Internet. The result was that record labels invested more in artists that were "safe" – chart music became more appealing to producers than bands with unique sounds. In 2018, however, music streaming revenue exceeded that of traditional revenue streams (e.g. record sales, album sales, downloads).[45] 2017 alone saw a 41.1% increase in streaming revenue alone and an 8.1% increase in overall revenue.[45] Streaming revenue is one of the largest driving forces behind the growth in the music industry. In an interview, Jonathan Dworkin, a senior vice president of strategy and business development at Universal, said that "we cannot be afraid of perpetual change, because that dynamism is driving growth."[45]

The term "streaming wars" was coined to discuss the new era of competition between video streaming services such as NetflixAmazon Prime VideoHuluHBO MaxDisney+, and Apple TV+.

over-the-top media service is a streaming media service offered directly to viewers via the Internet. OTT bypasses cable, broadcast, and satellite television platforms, the companies that traditionally act as a controller or distributor of such content. Most of these services are owned by a major film studio. Some streaming services started as an add-on to Blu-ray offerings, which are supplements to the programs watched.[1]

Streaming is an alternative to file downloading, a process in which the end-user obtains the entire file(s) for the content before watching or listening to it.

A client end-user can use their media player, computer, mobile phone and smart TV to start playing digital video content before the entire file has been transmitted. Users will need an Internet connection to stream or download video contents. Users lacking compatible hardware or software systems may be unable to stream or download certain content.
